Mr. Frank Nikola

In 1960, Scouting at St. Alphonsus was changed forever.  That was the year Mr Nikola joined as a leader.  And, in the 40 years that followed, Mr. Nikola had served the St. Alphonsus Scouting Units in more capacities than can be mentioned.  For 40 years he demonstrated his dedication to the principles of the Scout Law and Scout Oath and his kindness and love of Scouting became an example and inspiration for hundreds of boys.  For 40 years, Mr. Nikola's presence shaped the direction of Pack 3889, Pack 3887,  Troop 889, Troop 890, Explorer Post 2889, and Venture Crew 2889.  Mr. Nikola was a major force in St. Alphonsus Scouting for over half of its long history.   Mr. Nikola passed away in February 2000 from a stroke suffered while camping at the Owasippe Scout Reservation.

His dedication and love of Scouting did not go unnoticed.  Along the way he was recognized with honors almost too numerous to mention.  He was a recipient of the Award of Merit and the Scoutmaster's Key.  He was a Vigil Member of the Owasippe Lodge Order of the Arrow.  And best of all, he received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award, the highest award presented to an adult Scout Leader.

The Scout Oath, which starts with the phrase, "On my honor," contains only 40 words.  Mr. Nikola honorable gave Scouting one year of service for each word in the Scout Oath.

Forty years ago, Scouting at St. Alphonsus and in Thunderbird District was changed forever by the presence of Mr. Frank Nikola.  Now, it is changed forever by his absence.

A SCOUT'S REQUIEM

He has hiked along life's pathway,
His pack upon his back,
He has pitched his tent and rested
Here and there along the track.

He has used his compass wisely
To guide him on his way
In hopes to reach the campsite
Of the Great Chief Scout some day.

He has always been trustworthy -
Never let his honor lag,
He has always been loyal
To his Country and his flag.

He has done his best at all times -
Kept his Promise - been prepared,
And we know his deeds please God
Now that his soul is bared.

He has lightened others' burdens,
With his smile along the way,
And now his hand’s in God's hand,
Hiking with Him day by day.

And when our span of life runs out,
We'll make this gentle plea -
May we join him around God’s Campfire
At the Final Camporee.
